Aquarium Industry Census

FAQ

It is an independent research initiative focused on collecting large-scale, real-world data about how aquariums are started and maintained. The goal is to better understand common practices, highlight areas of agreement, and identify where guidance is most contradictory or unclear.

The Census is designed for people and organizations who work with aquariums on a regular basis—such as store employees, local fish store owners, service and installation professionals, public aquarists, breeders, educators, manufacturers, and experienced hobbyists. New hobbyists are also welcome to participate where appropriate.

Yes. The Census is not owned or controlled by any specific retailer, manufacturer, or trade group. Survey questions and analysis are designed to remain neutral and focused on understanding practices across the industry—not promoting any particular brand or method.

Responses will be combined and analyzed in aggregate to identify trends, patterns, and consensus across different roles, sectors, and tank types. Summary findings may be published in consensus reports and shared with the broader aquarium community to support better education and more consistent recommendations.

No. Individual responses are not published. Data is viewed and summarized at a group level (for example: by
role, experience level, or tank type), not at the individual level.

No. The focus of the Census is on practices, patterns, and approaches—not on endorsing specific products.

The schedule may evolve over time, but the goal is to periodically revisit key topics and add new areas of
research as the industry and hobby change.
