About the Aquarium Industry Census™
What is the Aquarium Industry Census™?
The Aquarium Industry Census™ is an independent, ongoing research effort focused on understanding how aquariums are started, managed, and supported across the entire aquatic community. The project collects input from people who work with aquariums every day—store staff, service professionals, public aquarists, educators, and experienced hobbyists—as well as from the organizations that support them.
Why this Census exists:
Advice about aquarium care often varies dramatically from one source to another. New tank owners may receive conflicting guidance on cycling, stocking, filtration, water changes, feeding, and quarantine, depending on where they ask and who they speak to. This inconsistency can lead to livestock loss, frustration, and early failures that might have been avoided with clearer, more aligned information.
The Aquarium Industry Census™ was created to:
- Gather real-world data from across the hobby and industry
- Identify areas where there is strong agreement—and where there is not
- Help highlight practices that support better long-term outcomes
- Reduce confusion for beginners by informing clearer education and training
Who participates:
The Census is open to:
- Big-box aquatic departments and national retail chains
- Independent local fish stores (LFS)
- Aquarium maintenance and installation professionals
- Breeders and specialized livestock suppliers
- Public aquariums and accredited zoos
- Marine and freshwater research or aquaculture programs
- Manufacturers, distributors, and product companies
- Clubs, societies, and organized communities
- Experienced hobbyists and content creators
How the results will be used:
Responses are analyzed in aggregate, with a focus on trends, patterns, and consensus. The goal is not to promote any single method or product, but to better understand what professionals and experienced aquarists are actually doing—and what they believe works best—across different types of systems and experience levels.
Over time, the Census aims to support more consistent, evidence-informed guidance for new tank owners and the professionals who help them.
